What Are PFAS? A Parent's Guide to Forever Chemicals

What Are PFAS? A Parent's Guide to Forever Chemicals

A few years ago, if someone had asked me what PFAS were, I honestly would have had no idea.

Like many people, I thought I was making good choices. I tried to eat well, I exercised, I paid attention to the products I bought and I read ingredient labels where I could.

But then I started experiencing my own skin irritations.

That led me down a path I never expected.

The more I researched everyday products, the more one word kept appearing.

PFAS.

At first, I assumed it was just another scientific acronym I'd never need to understand.

Instead, it became one of the biggest reasons HapeeBum exists today.

What exactly are PFAS?

PFAS stands for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances.

It's not just one chemical.

It's actually a large family of thousands of man-made chemicals that have been used in manufacturing since the 1940s.

They're incredibly useful because they help products resist:

  • Water
  • Grease
  • Oil
  • Stains

That's why they've become so common.

Why are they called "forever chemicals"?

One of the things that surprised me most was learning why PFAS are often called forever chemicals.

Many PFAS don't break down easily.

Instead, they can remain in soil and water for many years.

Some can also remain in the human body for a long time before being eliminated.

That's why researchers continue studying their long-term effects.

Where are PFAS found?

This was probably the biggest surprise for me.

PFAS have been found in a wide range of everyday products, including some:

  • Non-stick cookware
  • Water-resistant clothing
  • Food packaging
  • Cosmetics
  • Cleaning products
  • Some firefighting foams

Not every product contains PFAS, and manufacturers continue changing their formulations, but they have historically been used in many consumer goods.

Why are people concerned?

Research into PFAS is still ongoing.

Scientists continue studying different PFAS because not all behave the same way.

However, certain PFAS have been associated with health concerns including:

  • Changes in cholesterol
  • Reduced immune response
  • Hormonal effects
  • Thyroid impacts
  • Increased risk of certain cancers

It's important to remember that risk depends on many factors, including the type of PFAS, the amount of exposure and how long someone has been exposed.

This isn't about creating fear.

It's about understanding why so many people are choosing products made without intentionally added PFAS.

Can we avoid PFAS completely?

Probably not.

PFAS have been used so widely that they're found in many places around us.

That doesn't mean we should panic.

For me, it's about focusing on the things I can control.

I can't change everything.

But I can make thoughtful choices where practical.

That's exactly how I approached creating HapeeBum.

Why HapeeBum is PFAS-free

When we started developing HapeeBum, one question kept coming back to me.

"If I can avoid intentionally adding PFAS to a product families use every day... why wouldn't I?"

That decision became part of our philosophy.

Simple.

Thoughtful.

No unnecessary extras.

Because everyday products shouldn't be something we have to worry about.

Small choices add up

One thing I've learnt through building HapeeBum is that healthier living rarely comes from one big decision.

It's usually lots of small ones.

Reading labels.

Asking questions.

Learning something new.

Choosing products you're comfortable bringing into your home.

No one gets it perfect.

I certainly don't.

But every small step is still a step in the right direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PFAS stand for?

PFAS stands for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, a large group of man-made chemicals used in many industrial and consumer products.

Why are PFAS called forever chemicals?

Many PFAS break down very slowly in the environment, which is why they're often referred to as forever chemicals.

Are all PFAS harmful?

Scientists continue researching PFAS because there are thousands of different compounds. Some have been studied much more extensively than others.

Why did HapeeBum choose PFAS-free materials?

We wanted to create an everyday product made without intentionally added PFAS, giving families another thoughtful option.

Final Thoughts

When I first came across the term PFAS, I remember thinking...

"Why have I never heard of this before?"

Maybe you've had the same thought while reading this.

My goal isn't to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't buy.

It's simply to share what I've learnt while building HapeeBum and hopefully make choosing everyday products feel a little less overwhelming.

Because informed choices are always better than uninformed ones.
